Now is the time to start searching and reaching out to photographers.
If you don’t know what that search should look like, I’m here to help. I can’t stress how important it is to hire the right photographer … just like your wedding day, this is a monumental event in your life that deserves to be preserved forever as beautiful artwork.
Here’s some things to consider when trying to find the the best newborn photographer for you:
1. Location
Do you want an in-home session for a more cozy, lifestyle approach? Or do your prefer a studio session for more traditional, posed photos? Some photographers offer both and some offer only one or the other.
2. Aesthetic
What style of photography are you drawn to? Do you prefer an artful, light and airy aesthetic? A dark and moody feel? A photojournalistic style? Every photographer has their own style of editing and artistic vision.
3. Experience
How much experience and education does the photographer have with newborns? Newborns are a speciality: experience + education are HUGE. Browse their portfolio- if you don’t see many newborns on their website – email them and ask to see examples or even full galleries of newborn sessions.
4. Budget
Budget – always the elephant in the room. But it’s important and as we all work hard for our money – you need to make sure you’re investing wisely. I use the term investing intentionally – while photos might not have a monetary return, their emotional value increases exponentially with every passing year. A session with an experienced, talented newborn photographer will not be a small investment – ask about what payment plans are available.
5. Availability
How far in advance do they need you to book? Many photographers, myself included, book newborns months in advance. As the exact arrival date of baby can be unpredictable and newborn sessions ideally are done within the first few weeks, your newborn photographer needs to allow flexibility in their schedule during the month baby is expected. Personally, the earlier you contact me to book your newborn session, the better chances I’ll have availability for you.
6. Services
What level of service do they provide? After you just have a baby, how much effort are you going to be able to put into your session without feeling totally stressed out? A full service photographer (like myself) will take all the planning off your plate. With wardrobe, professional hair & make-up, and custom artwork design all done for you…you won’t have to lift a finger.
